Welcome to the Gunn Environmental Club's new initiative, Green Lights 4 Gunn. Our goal is in essence, to change the world one bulb at a time. We strive to promote the use of energy-efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs (commonly known as CFL) here at Gunn by offering a special lightbulb exchange program. Students can trade in their old, inefficient incandescent lightbulbs for a brand new CFL. Or... they can simply purchase them at a very low price.
What are the Benefits?
Over half the energy consumed by an incandescent light bulb produces heat, not light. A CFL typically uses up to 75 percent less energy than an incandescent bulb to provide the same amount of light. It also last up to 10 times longer. If you do the math, you could save over $80.00 from one lightbulb simply by switching to a CFL.
If you replace incandescent light bulbs with CFL light bulbs...
- ....then you'll consume less electricity
- .....then less coal-based power will have to be generated to meet your demand
- ....then less coal will be burned
- ....then less greenhouse gas will be released into the atmosphere
